Elevate your career in the design industry to work as an interior designer. Learn the skills to carry out a range of interior design and decoration services with equipment and software such as computer-aided design (CAD) and the latest industry techniques and processes.

Interior designers consider aesthetics, function, branding, manufacturing, marketability and construction of interior spaces, including materials and sustainable environments and special needs for the benefit of the user. This course will provide you with these practical skills so you can plan and execute creative design and spatial solutions using the latest interior design theories, practices and principles. You will also learn to adapt global design trends and technical innovations, while developing contacts with interiors sources, products, and suppliers.

Commencing at the diploma level for students with the equivalent of 12 years of schooling, the advanced diploma qualification will take three years to complete.

Assessment methods

The methods of assessment used in this course include research to inform design decisions and practical demonstration during class time, as well as oral questioning during presentations and folio compilation for final design and assessment submissions. Evidence of skills is also gathered in the form of observed performance, project outcomes and portfolio documents, knowledge will be tested through oral questions during presentations and in writing of briefs, reports, schedules and quizzes and by a written knowledge test.

These assessment strategies and evidence gathering are in accordance with the relevant training package or accreditation guidelines. Detailed Information is available in the assessment matrix, learning plans and assessment tools for each of the units of competency. Assessors use the matrix to ensure assessments, are undertaken across the duration of the course, rather than clustered together at particular times.

Learning resources, facilities and equipment

The following learning resources, facilities and equipment are available at each campus so that you can achieve the skill and knowledge requirements of this course. Learning resources may include access to learning plans, assessment tools, lecturer notes, PowerPoints, previous student examples, Blackboard online resources, workbooks, CAD drawings,  work books for drawing, plans and documentation drawing used for projects, drawing examples, templates for schedules and project management templates.

Facilities and equipment may include access to design studios equipped with display screens, presentation boards, Wi-Fi, AV screens, drafting tables and preparation areas, lecture theatres, computer labs with both PC and MAC browsers, specialised software (AutoCAD 2018, Sketch up 2018, SU Podium, Adobe, Microsoft office) and special equipment such as portable technical drawing boards and drafting, cutting and mounting equipment.

TAFE is cheaper than university and provides more practical work than university. I feel more confident and ready to work than learning just theory and having no practice. Also, I feel that there is more contact and support from lecturers at TAFE. There is also a lot to learn from each assignment we work on. We go on site visits and are allowed to be creative and produce functional designs.
