Begin your career in the health industry with this qualification. You will learn about the musculoskeletal system and treatment options to improve clients’ health and wellbeing. This course covers several different types of massage techniques such as deep tissue, trigger point, manual lymph drainage, myofascial, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF advanced massage technique used to help reset muscle holding patterns) and a range of specialised treatments for people with chronic health conditions.

During this course you will acquire a vast knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology as well as effective communication skills to deal with clients, health professionals and the health system. This will ensure a sound understanding of working safely and ethically in the healthcare environment. With a very practical and hands on skills training approach, you will have weekly access to a Live Works Clinic at each campus which has been developed to simulate the workplace. Opportunities may arise where you can be part of external sporting events to provide support and in some cases have access to offsite facilities and resources which will be beneficial to your studies.

On completion of this course you will have the skills to assess each client’s needs and plan and conduct remedial massage using a wide range of techniques.

Work placement

Students are required to undertake approximately 200 clinic hours at the Live Works clinic at South Metro TAFE which is a simulated environment that has been set up to reflect workplace conditions.  The student must prepare for and manage at least 60 remedial massage treatment sessions and clients must include males and females from different stages of life with varied presentations.  This will help to strengthen the skills and knowledge you have learnt during your studies. A documented record of clients and duration of treatments in the supervised clinic training is kept for all students during the course.  You will be required to attend all clinic sessions as advised by South Metro TAFE staff.

The methods of assessment used in this course include portfolios and written questioning to show the student’s underpinning knowledge, preparing case study assignments to show an integration of both the rationale and practical application of remedial massage treatments to a range of clients over a period of time, practical observation of skills including role plays to demonstrate performance of technical assessment and hands on treatment skills, interpersonal communication skills for completing client health records and accurate health notes, presentations to show an understanding of pathology, disease and requirements of a health worker in Australia, projects to allow students to demonstrate their skills and knowledge, and use of the Integrated Student Clinic (ISC) which provides an opportunity to revise course content in a controlled manner and allows time to for students to integrate both theory and practical components.

These assessment strategies and evidence gathering are in accordance with the relevant training package or accreditation guidelines.  Detailed Information is available in the assessment matrix, learning plans and assessment tools for each of the units of competency.  Assessors use this matrix to ensure assessments, are undertaken across the duration of the course, rather than clustered together at particular times.

A documented record of clients and duration of treatments in the supervised clinic training is kept for all students during the course.  You will be required to attend all clinic sessions as advised by North Metro TAFE staff.

Facilities and equipment may include access to a simulated Live work environment, oil bottles, fitted sheets, massage related equipment such as massage tables, pillows, bolsters, face cradles, gas lift stools, student log books, client consultation form records, full classroom facilities including whiteboards, data projectors, computers and student Wi-Fi.   Students at North Metro TAFE (NMT) will practice in a variety of clinical and sporting environments with clients ranging from people with disabilities to elite athletes.  NMT are affiliated with Western Australian professional sporting teams such as the Perth Wildcats, Perth Lynx, Perth Glory, Fremantle Dockers and the WA Female AFL Academy.

Work placement

Students are required to undertake approximately 200 clinic hours at the Live Works clinic at South Metro TAFE which is a simulated environment that has been set up to reflect workplace conditions.  The student must prepare for and manage at least 60 remedial massage treatment sessions and clients must include males and females from different stages of life with varied presentations.  This will help to strengthen the skills and knowledge you have learnt during your studies. A documented record of clients and duration of treatments in the supervised clinic training is kept for all students during the course.  You will be required to attend all clinic sessions as advised by South Metro TAFE staff.

The methods of assessment used in this course include portfolios and written questioning to show the student’s underpinning knowledge, preparing case study assignments to show an integration of both the rationale and practical application of remedial massage treatments to a range of clients over a period of time, practical observation of skills including role plays to demonstrate performance of technical assessment and hands on treatment skills, interpersonal communication skills for completing client health records and accurate health notes, presentations to show an understanding of pathology, disease and requirements of a health worker in Australia, projects to allow students to demonstrate their skills and knowledge, and use of the Integrated Student Clinic (ISC) which provides an opportunity to revise course content in a controlled manner and allows time to for students to integrate both theory and practical components.

Australia offers brilliant education in the area of remedial massage which Japan does not have. Remedial massage is not common in my country so we can't study this course full time. If I can bring back my expertise to Japan it could be a huge business opportunity for me.
