Rui Scheidt Feix from Brazil has been named the International Student of the Year at the
2017 WA Training Awards. This award recognises the outstanding achievements of international students undertaking a vocational education and training course in Western Australia.
After working as an oceanographer and scuba diving instructor in Brazil, Rui's interest in nature and sustainability drove him to pursue a new career. By studying the
Diploma of Landscape Design at
South Metropolitan TAFE in Western Australia, Rui gained knowledge and hands-on skills valuable to this field.
Rui said, "I was very fortunate to have chosen South Metropolitan TAFE as a place to learn a new career, since the quality of lecturers and top level structure always provided me full conditions to develop skills asked by the industry, opening doors and helping me to get a job that I dreamed."
Rui is now a qualified landscape designer and helped to construct adventure parks at O'Connor's Nature Based Play in early 2016. He aims to help drive eco-friendly landscaping projects and helps local communities to develop positive attitudes and behaviour toward nature.
Rui said, "Maybe this can inspire other international students to follow their dreams. Sometimes we have concerns or we are afraid to start a new career due to the challenges. But challenges make us stronger and more confident."
"Choose something that you love to do. In this way, the journey will be much more enjoyable and rewarding and opportunities will come in order to build a solid and successful career."
