Amanda is designing her future at TAFE International Western Australia
Studying interior design in Australia was a no brainer for Amanda. Growing up in sunny Mauritius, a subtropical island nation in the Indian Ocean, Amanda always wanted to know what it was like to live on a bigger island or in another country.
Finally, spurred into action by this curiosity, she made the decision to move overseas. "I had travelled to Australia several times before on holidays and decided to be more adventurous and make the move," she says.
With that, Amanda packed her bags for a new life in Western Australia. Amanda says that her time living in Perth, Western Australia's capital, has been pretty incredible. "Life in Perth is enriching, and life as a student in Perth is an adventurous journey."
Like many Australian cities, Perth has a very diverse culture and lifestyle. But there are many other reasons why Amanda loves living in the city. "A central location, easy access to transport facilities, good food choices, lots of activities and community gatherings."
"People are nice and friendly, and several events are organised," she says. "My first years in Perth have been filled with great experiences." Plus, thanks to Perth's endless blue skies and abundance of nature, Amanda even feels a bit closer to her home country.
Amanda also credits TAFE International WA (TIWA) for playing a big part in her student journey. "TIWA has some amazing, fun and creative lecturers!" she says. "That's the highlight of my time here."
Studying the course
MSF60118 Advanced Diploma of Interior Design with TIWA at
North Metropolitan TAFE, Perth campus has been a really positive experience for Amanda, as she feels fully prepared for the workplace.
"TAFE is very practical, and the interior design course allows me to learn different software that can be used in the industry," she says. "I did not use any graphic software before starting the course, and I've learned how to use AutoCAD, SketchUp, SU Podium, Lumion, Photoshop and Canva."
On top of its modern facilities, Amanda also says that North Metropolitan TAFE's roster of guest speakers and frequent site visits have been enormously beneficial. "These are regular occurrences to maintain networking and stay on-trend," she says. "Perth campus has industry-experienced lecturers who help us understand the field, and we learn lots from them."
As well, during the COVID-19 pandemic, international student mentors have been available to support Amanda and other students and ensure that courses and assessments run smoothly. "All facilities have been provided to make sure that we can still learn and work like we would have in class. Even during hard times, the lecturers are always available and happy to help," she says.
When it comes to her goals for the future, Amanda has her sights set high. "My wish is to become a famous designer," she says. "My course in interior design has improved my knowledge in space planning and understanding Australian Standards. Furthermore, sustainability classes have made me more aware of the world we live in and how to design for a better future."
Luckily, her course has her feeling very well prepared for whatever tomorrow brings. "With COVID and its unpredictable future, our course has been adjusted to implement 'COVID' designs for safety," she says. "The fact that TIWA always stays on trend means we are ahead for the future. I believe that everything I have learned – and keep learning – through TIWA is already huge preparation for my future career."
Finally, Amanda shares some advice for fellow international students. "Consider studying with TIWA, as it gets you well prepared for real life work. You have a higher chance of being selected for a job, as the practical side of TAFE programs is highly regarded."
Best wishes to Amanda in her final year of studies!
