Seizing the opportunity at CR TAFE: Marie Loise Keana Capul

I’m studying the CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care at Central Regional TAFE’s Geraldton campus. I received an email that I was eligible for the regional bursary for TAFE international students. It is in line with my personal and professional interest.

How have you enjoyed the course so far?

I have been studying for about six months now.

I’ve enjoyed the freedom of speech and how the lecturers listen to everybody’s input. They allow us to share our own experiences and thoughts relating to the topic. Also, I like the opportunity of a simulated environment (Early Childhood Education and Care Crèche) given to students to prepare for workplace training.

I plan to continue my professional development and look for work in the childcare industry where I will practice the skills I have learned.

How have you found the facilities at Geraldton campus?

The facilities are conducive for learning. I especially like the library and also that they provide free sanitary products in the women’s bathroom.

The lecturers are approachable. They give options and provide opportunities for me to answer my assessments. They also provide assistance when I am having a hard time answering an assessment question.

How long have you been living in Geraldton?

I’ve been living here for nine months now.

I still feel homesick but living in Australia is not bad at all. I sometimes hangout with my friends and I also play badminton every Monday. I usually introduce myself to other people and build connections with them. I also know some people because of my Aunt's connections to the Geraldton Filipino community.

Have you found a part-time job?

Yes, I work three jobs at the moment. I work as an aged care worker, in early childhood education, and a café crew in a fast food restaurant. I work as a casual in all of my three jobs. Sometimes, it’s hard to manage time but, I’m used to it now.

Would you recommend the regional bursary to other students?

Yes, it would greatly benefit international students financially. My advice for international students is to not waste any chance of getting the WA regional TAFE international student bursary. The bursary is very helpful especially to those students who really want to gain quality education and professional development.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

Having the WA regional bursary really helped me financially. I use it to pay for my tuition fees so I now have to pay less. Thanks to the governments’ initiative, international students will now be more interested in applying for a course in the regional areas.
